Winnipeg man charged with string of offences after high-speed chase in Neepawa

RCMP say a 27-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with a string of offences following a high-speed chase in western Manitoba, in which a stolen SUV slammed into a police cruiser and dragged an officer who was trying to make the arrest.

At about 11 a.m. Friday, officers received a call about a driver, who was possibly impaired, stealing gas from a station in Gladstone, Man.

RCMP caught up with the white vehicle about 37 kilometres east of Neepawa, Man., on Highway 16. They tried to pull the SUV over, but the the vehicle slammed into a police cruiser, RCMP said.

"An officer attempted to arrest the suspect and was subsequently dragged by the driver," police said in a news release Friday afternoon.

"During this time, the officer discharged his firearm in an attempt to stop the suspect. The suspect was not injured and the officer managed to free himself suffering minor injuries."

On Saturday, RCMP charged the driver with a list of offences, including:

- Impaired driving

- Driving with a blood-alcohol level over 0.08

- Dangerous operation of a vehicle

- Fleeing from police

- Resisting arrest

- Assaulting a police officer

- Two counts of probation violation

- Two counts of theft under $5,000

- Mischief over $5,000

- Possession of stolen property over $5,000

- Four other Highway Traffic Action violations

The suspect remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Brandon Monday morning.
