RCMP investigate fatal collision near Fort Saskatchewan
One person is dead and another is in hospital after a two-vehicle collision near Fort Saskatchewan Sunday morning.
RCMP said the collision happened on Highway 16 and Highway 834 east of Elk Island National Park at around 5:30 a.m.
Police say a black Dodge Ram was travelling westbound on Highway 16 when a silver Nissan Titan travelling eastbound turned left onto Highway 834. Both trucks collided, RCMP say.
The driver of the Nissan Titan, a 48-year-old man, died at the scene. Police are not releasing his name.
The other driver, a 49-year-old man, was taken to hospital by ambulance. His injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
There were no passengers in either vehicle.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and it's not yet known if alcohol was a contributing factor.
Westbound traffic on Highway 16 was being rerouted Sunday morning as police investigated, but the highway has since been reopened.
Crews towed the badly-damaged Nissan Titan from the scene of the collision Sunday morning.
The Dodge Ram was in the ditch nearby.
