RCMP investigate suspicious packages

Hinton RCMP are investigating after suspicious packages with an unknown powder were found at two different locations in Hinton on March 16.

Staff Sgt. Chris Murphy of the Hinton RCMP says there is currently no concern for public safety.

The first package was located at the Canada Post at 104 Park Street, and the second package was identified at the probation office located at 560 Carmichael Lane.

Hinton’s RCMP detachment hopes to release more details, including what the powder was and where it was sent from, but is currently keeping silent on the details to protect the investigation.

“We don’t want to compromise the investigation and there could be safety concerns for copycat incidents,” Murphy said the morning of March 17.

Murphy assured that protocol was followed at both locations, although he couldn’t share what those exact protocols entailed as that might give too much insight into some of the dilemmas faced by the responding emergency crews.

Three individuals were evacuated from one location, but it is unclear how many were evacuated from the second location.

“It’s important that we limit exposure to anybody,” Murphy said.

He added that there are a lot of resources put into this investigation and hopes that some of the evidence can be released at a later time.

The investigation started in the morning on March 16 and crews had cleared both locations close to 8 pm. The investigation involves multiple agencies.

He added that these incidents aren’t uncommon and that a similar package was identified three years ago at the Hinton Provincial courthouse.
