RCMP investigating death of Edmonton fighter who participated in Ultra MMA event
EDMONTON — Mounties in Alberta say they are investigating the death of a fighter following an Ultra MMA charity event over the weekend.
Cpl. Troy Savinkoff says Parkland RCMP received a report of the mixed martial arts fighter's death on Monday morning.
Savinkoff says he was taken to hospital immediately after the Saturday fight at Enoch Cree First Nation west of Edmonton.
The fighter was 33 and lived in Edmonton.
Savinkoff says the death was traumatic for the fighter's family as well as the people who watched the match.
Nearly two months ago, a judge in a fatality inquiry into the 2017 death of an Edmonton boxer recommended Alberta regulate combative sporting events in the province instead of municipalities.
