RCMP looking for driver after hit-and-run with cyclist in Campbellton

RCMP in Campbellton are looking for the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit and run on Monday, May 15.

In a release, the Mounties said a cyclist was struck by an SUV at the intersection of Dover Street and Sister Greene Road at around 9:45 a.m.

The driver did not stop and left the scene, and the cyclist suffered minor injuries, they said.

The RCMP are looking for a small, white SUV with a veterans' licence plate. The vehicle may be scratched or dented on the driver's side door from the accident.

Vehicle-bicycle collisions have been under scrutiny in the province since the death of competitive cyclist Ellen Watters of Sussex in Dec. 2016. Watters died after she was hit by a car.

Her death lead to the passing of "Ellen's Law" in New Brunswick on May 5. It requires drivers to leave one metre of space between their vehicles and cyclists on the road.

P.E.I. also passed its version of Ellen's Law on Monday.

Police are asking anyone with information about the accident to contact the Campbellton RCMP at 506-789-6000.
