RCMP shoot at stolen vehicle on O'Chiese First Nation, triggering police watchdog investigation

An RCMP officer fired at a vehicle that had been reported stolen on a First Nation in Alberta last week, triggering an investigation by the province's police watchdog.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said it happened Friday on the O'Chiese First Nation, which is about 130 kilometres northwest of Red Deer.

"At approximately 10 p.m. on March 16, members of the Rocky Mountain House RCMP were pursuing a vehicle that had been reported stolen and had failed to stop for police," the agency said.

"After police laid a spike belt across the road, an RCMP member fired his service pistol at the vehicle. Officers found the vehicle and later arrested a 28-year-old man who was believed to be driving. The man appeared unhurt."

ASIRT says the investigation continues.
