RCMP urge motorists not to leave keys in car

RCMP in Kings County are urging motorists not to leave keys inside their vehicles after several recent thefts in the area.

The latest theft took place early Tuesday morning when someone made off with a pick-up truck in Lower Montague. RCMP say the keys had been left inside the vehicle.

Officers started looking for the truck, but a snow plow operator noticed it parked in the middle of the highway not far from where it was taken.

Staff Sgt. Kevin Baillie said there have been four similar vehicle thefts in the Kings County area since Jan. 1.

"It seems like there is somebody going through unlocked vehicles looking for the keys," said Baillie."It is not that uncommon, sometimes people leave keys under a mat or up over the visor.

"And in these cases I guess it's almost what we'd call a joy riding thing that someone is getting the keys, starting the vehicles and driving them usually a short distance. Although in one case a vehicle was put in the ditch and quite a bit of damage done."

Baillie said the thefts have all occurred after midnight.

Anyone with information is asked to call Kings District RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
