RDN requests more input on airport noise mitigation

The chair of the Regional District of Nanaimo board has written a letter to the Nanaimo Airport Commission requesting that Electoral Area B have input on noise mitigation efforts at the airport.

Following a motion by Area B (Gabriola, Mudge, DeCourcy) Director Vanessa Craig at the June 22 board meeting, Chair Tyler Brown wrote a letter “indicating that residents of Electoral Area B should be considered stakeholders when considering flightpaths,” and that electoral areas A and B should be represented on the airport commission’s Noise Mitigation Roundtable. The RDN has not received a response as of Aug. 6.

At the same meeting, the RDN board received a letter from Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee Chair Dan Rogers that expressed concerns about the RDN’s regional growth strategy land use amendments for the airport. Rogers’s letter noted concerns including increased noise along flight paths as well as impacts on air quality. The LTC had an opportunity to review the proposed bylaw amendments prior to its approval by the board. The Area B director cannot vote on regional growth strategy-related items as Area B is not included in the strategy.
