Real Salt Lake trolled Sporting Kansas City on Twitter after winning MLS playoff game
Someone at Real Salt Lake has a long memory.
When Sporting Kansas City won a penalty-kick shootout against Salt Lake in the 2013 MLS Cup, goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen made his way to a wall at what is now Children’s Mercy Park.
The writing on that wall signifies the years Sporting Kansas City has won a trophy, and Nielsen spray-painted “2013” under MLS Cup Champions.
Eight years later, Real Salt Lake knocked Sporting KC out of the MLS playoffs with a 2-1 win in Sunday’s Western Conference semifinal match at Children’s Mercy Park.
Shortly after the victory, Real’s tweeted an image of its mascot at that same wall. Salt Lake wrote: “waLL painted” and tweeted an image of “LOL” having been spray-painted on the wall.
The double-L in “waLL” likely was a reference to Sunday’s game and Salt Lake’s 1-0 win in the regular-season finale at Children’s Mercy Park on Nov. 7. In that game officials missed a handball that would have given Sporting KC a penalty kick. The Professional Referee Organization later admitted a mistake had been made.
