Vancouver breaks heat record
According to Environment Canada's weather station in Vancouver, it was the hottest May 28th on record in the city — by a very slim margin — with temperatures reaching 25.2 degrees on Sunday.
"The previous record was 25 degrees set back in 1934 so just snuck one record in there," said Environment Canada Meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau.
"It wasn't really exceptional in terms of how hot it was — the big thing is that it's been so cool this spring so it felt like a big shift."
Charbonneau said a ridge of high pressure over B.C. was responsible for the sunshine.
"We haven't really had a lot of these big ridges of high pressure build in and stay with us for an extended period of time giving us the warm hot sunny weather we'll often get a few times in the spring," she said.
"This is really the first taste of that."
But the warm weather is not expected to continue this week, as showers and clouds move in.
"Things are going to be closer to seasonal averages which is a high around 18 and we actually have a risk of thunderstorm late tonight and through tomorrow as this ridge breaks down."
Warmer temperatures are expected to return in the middle of next week.
