Recycling facility in Lunenburg County cutting jobs

Workers found out about the job cuts at the facility on Wednesday.

The regional recycling facility for Bridgewater, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg County is shutting down the line that sorts the contents of bluebags.

The decision means that nearly half the people who work on the line at the Lunenburg Regional Recycling and Compost Facility will lose their jobs .

The recycling facility located between Bridgewater and Mahone Bay has aging sorting equipment that municipalities say is too expensive to fix.

Instead, they are going to truck their waste to Scotia Recycling in Kentville.

Councillor Frank Fawson of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg said the decision will leave workers looking for new jobs at a time when unemployment in the area is severe. In particular, because of job losses in the forest industry.

Fawson said municipal councils have to balance the idea of local economic development against the cost of upgrading a plant that is now out of date.
