Recycling program for giant grain bags will continue

A program to recycle giant plastic grain bags will continue for another year, the government says.

The federal and provincial governments are putting $200,000 into this year's recycling program.

The single-use bags, 40-90 metres long by three metres in diameter, are used on farms as an alternative to metal grain bins.

Last year, about 850 tonnes of plastic from used bags was shipped by Simply Ag Solutions from their 13 collection sites in Saskatchewan.

Since the pilot program started in 2011, some 7,345 bags have been recycled, the province says.

Farmers and ranchers can take their grain bags to collection sites in Cudworth, Hirsch, Humboldt, Kelvington, Macoun, Marshall, Milestone, Moose Jaw, Mossbank, Prince Albert, Rush Lake, Saskatoon and Unity.
