Red River skating trail now extends all the way to St. Vital bridge

For the first time ever, the Red River skating trail has been lengthened to 6.1 kilometres long, reaching all the way from The Forks to the St. Vital bridge.

“The Red River Mutual Trail has never extended this far down the Red River and we’re excited to connect those communities to Winnipeg’s downtown,” Paul Jordan, chief executive officer at The Forks, said in a news release Tuesday.

“There is still a lot of winter ahead of us and it’s a great way for Winnipeggers to get outside and embrace it.”

The trail also recently added warming huts and river painting by local artist Kal Barteski.

The skating trail is not on the Assiniboine River this year because there has been too much open water.

“The direction, length and timing of the Red River Mutual Trail change each year,” said Jordan. “This year we have not been able to get onto the Assiniboine River, but extending the portion down the Red River has been a great alternative.”
