Reel in the long weekend with ice fishing in Waterloo region

Catch a break from the lockdown and possibly some pike along the way on this Family Day long weekend at the four ice fishing locations open in the region.

Grand River Conservation Authority’s website lists all four ice fishing locations in the region as open, at the Shade’s Mills, Guelph Lake, Belwood Lake, Pinehurst conservation areas.

There are a few things to look out for, though, before heading out to the ice.

“Ice fishing is not permitted at any other GRCA property and may be considered trespassing,” Cameron Linwood, Conservation’s spokesperson reminds.

“We continue to focus on working collaboratively with our municipal partners to educate the public about the risks associated with accessing frozen waterbodies,” he wrote.

Of course, no outing is without a reminder to follow all safety guidelines, both pandemic-oriented and not.

Regulations that apply to those interested in ice fishing include all GRCA conservation areas rules, local and provincial public health guidelines and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fishing regulations.
