Regina drug store worker facing charges over theft of medications

Officer hurt by moving vehicle as suspects flee, Regina police say

Police in Regina say a 46-year-old worker at a local drug store is facing charges of theft and trafficking in relation to what they call a "significant" amount of prescription drugs. Two other people, who did not work at the store, have also been charged.

Police identified the business as pharmacy on the 4100 block of Albert Street, which is the location of a shopping centre with a Shoppers Drug Mart.

Police said two adults, the employee and a 42-year-old woman, are facing a total of 13 charges. They added that, as part of the same investigation, a 17-year-old faces one charge of drug possession.

Police said their investigation took place over the course of several days after being alerted to numerous thefts from the pharmacy.

They identified a suspect and, at around 6 a.m. CST on Saturday, officers arrested a man who was leaving the store.

They searched his vehicle and said they found several bottles of prescription medication containing, in total, more than 600 pills, including a form of morphine and two other drugs, Hydromorphone and Methamphetamine. Officers also obtained a search warrant to check out the suspect's home on Queen Street. That search also produced evidence related to the charges, including 350 more pills, including Diazepam, Lorazepam, Dilantin and Cyclobenzaprine.

Two stolen motorcycles were also recovered in the search, as well as small quantities of cannabis resin and marijuana.

The adults accused have appeared in court. The youth has a court date in June.
