Regina elementary school students tape principal to wall

Students at St. Francis Community School taped their principal to a wall on Friday morning.

Principal James Wahl was fastened to a gymnasium wall as part of a fundraiser for a new playground.

The school council was hoping to make at least $750 to go toward the new play structure. The goal was shattered as $1,580 was raised.

Students went out and sold strips of tape for $2 a piece. All together, 790 strips were sold.

One vigilant student sold 72 strips of duct tape.

Students packed into the gymnasium and were given the news. Once it was revealed they had beat their goal, more than doubling it, the principal braced himself for the Wahl to wall action.

Standing on two stools, he was slowly fastened to the wall as arms-length strips of duct tape were applied to his backside.

By exceeding their goal, the purchase date of the playground equipment will be pushed up, according to Twylla West, communications and media coordinator for Regina Catholic Schools.

She hopes the purchase will be made in early spring.

Once the tape was removed, the goal was to see if the strips sold were enough to hold and support the weight of the full-grown man.

It was.

A challenge has been issued to the principal of St. Gregory Elementary School to do the same, West said.

One future fundraiser coming up for those who wish to contribute is a turkey dinner. The dinner is being raffled off, to be prepared by a chef and will be delivered to the home of the winner, West said.
