Regina police say youth caused tens of thousands in graffiti damage

Charges pending after single-vehicle rollover on Sunday

Regina police say a 17-year-old male youth has caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of property damage with graffiti and "tags."

The teen is facing 29 charges of mischief under $5,000 after an investigation that started earlier this year.

Police say they started receiving reports of graffiti which had a particular type of lettering and style in July.

Known as "tags", they were allegedly found mainly in the 2000 to 2300 blocks of McAra and McDonald streets.

Garage doors, fences, power poles, the doors of a school and a church wall were among the surfaces that were defaced.

A Regina police graffiti co-ordinator helped identify a suspect and a warrant was obtained to search a residence on Oct. 25.

The 17-year-old was arrested the next day and made his first court appearance on Oct. 27.

He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
