Regina transit offering free rides for New Year's Eve

Regina police riding buses to nab car drivers using cellphones

Regina Transit and SGI are partnering to offer free transit and Paratransit service on New Year's Eve.

The bus service will run from 7 p.m. CST on Dec. 31 to 2:15 a.m. on Jan. 1.

It's the 29th year for the Ding in the New Year service.

"We know that in Saskatchewan too many people make the decision to drink and drive," said Mayor Michael Fougere in a press release.

"There is no excuse for getting behind the wheel after drinking, especially with a free, comprehensive service available."

Walsh Acres MLA Warren Steinley asked people to vow not to drink and drive as a New Year's resolution.

During last year's holiday season, seven people were killed and 33 more were injured in 119 crashes related to impaired driving in Saskatchewan, a press release said.

"Drive sober or plan a safe ride home for your family and everyone else's family," said Steinley on behalf of the minister responsible for SGI.
