Do you remember when? Mom Prom raising money for hospital foundation

"Oh my God remember when?"

Terri Dennis says she's been hearing that a lot lately as she works on the prom committee for Mom Prom, a fundraiser for the Northside/Harbourview Hospital Foundation in Cape Breton.

She and other people involved with the foundation are looking through old yearbooks trying to spark memories as they look to recapture high school dances of decades past.

"Old-style prom is what we're going for," said Dennis, who is the foundation's executive director.

Women (not necessarily moms) are invited to the event on Saturday, April 29, at Hotel North in North Sydney, where they can dance the night away to Jesse's Girl, Eye of the Tiger or Jack and Diane. It's fashioned after similar events that have been held in the U.S. for the past decade.

'Dig out a dress'

Attendees can expect crepe paper streamers, old-school lighting ("no lasers") and tacky, tacky dresses. In fact, there'll be a prize for tackiest dress.

"We want them to have fun, so if they have a bridesmaid dress from years ago, an evening gown from a New Year's Eve party that they went to," she said. "Basically, what we're saying is go to your closet and dig out a dress that you never thought you would wear again. This is the time to wear it."

There will be a prom queen, but Dennis says because they don't care about popularity contests anymore, the winner will be chosen at random.

"And of course we're going back old school where you will have a crown and a cape."

Dennis said the foundation is hoping to raise $5,000 at the event. Tickets are $25 and include a special room rate at the hotel.
