After being fired during a massive sexual assault scandal at the university, Baylor reportedly paid former coach Art Briles and former president Ken Starr millions of dollars in previously undisclosed settlements, Chuck Carlton of The Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

Briles received $15.1 million from Baylor after his dismissal. Starr received $4.52 million, and athletic director Ian McCaw, who resigned in wake of the scandal, received $761,059 — nearly one year’s salary.

The Dallas Morning News learned of the settlements after obtaining Baylor’s 990 filing to the IRS this week, which is required annually of non-profit organizations. The settlements had been subject to non-disclosure agreements.

Briles, who was fired in 2016, still had nearly $39 million left on his 10-year contract with the Bears. The settlements allowed Baylor to avoid any potential lawsuits with both Starr and Briles.

Baylor has had dozens of sexual assault accusations at the school in recent years, many involving the football program. An investigation into the university’s handling of the accusations found that “specific failings within both the football program and athletic department leadership” and said there were “significant concerns about the tone and culture within Baylor’s football program as it relates to accountability for all forms of student-athlete misconduct.”

One lawsuit alleged that 52 acts of rape by 31 players occurred between 2011 and 2014. That suit has since been settled. The NCAA, the Big 12, the Office of Civil Rights and the Texas Rangers are still investigating what occurred at Baylor under Starr, McCaw and Briles’ leadership.
