Yahoo sources: Chiefs, Travis Kelce agree to 4-year extension

The Kansas City Chiefs and tight end Travis Kelce have agreed to a four-year contract extension, Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor reports.

The deal is for an average of $14 million to $15 million per year. Paylor reports that the deal has $28 million in guarantees and $57.25 million in new money.

The news arrives hours after the San Francisco 49ers made George Kittle the highest-paid tight end in football for $15 million per year.

It also marks the latest deal for the Chiefs in keeping the core of their Super Bowl roster intact.

Another core player re-ups with Chiefs

Since winning the Super Bowl, the Chiefs have signed quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a record 10-year contract extension and defensive tackle Chris Jones to a four-year, $85 million deal. They’ve also restructured a deal with Sammy Watkins to keep the wide receiver in Kansas City and create salary cap space for their other signings.

Kelce productive and durable

Now the Chiefs have a deal to keep their All-Pro tight end in Kansas City. His previous contract was set to expire after the 2021 season.

Kelce, 30, has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last five seasons. He’s exceeded 80 catches and 1,000 yards receiving in each of the last four seasons and has missed just one regular-season game since his rookie campaign in 2013.

Kelce tallied 97 catches for 1,229 yards and five touchdowns last season. He made six catches for 43 yards and a touchdown in Kansas City’s Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers in February.
