9 – FODMAP diet

The FODMAP diet gained popularity as a guide to help manage irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). FODMAP stands for types of carbohydrates that that body absorbs poorly that can cause bloating, gas and stomach pain: Fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols.
The diet works by categorizing food into both high and low FODMAP categories and begins by severely restricting all high FODMAP foods like cow’s milk, poultry, wheat, high fructose corn syrup and onion. People on the diet stick to consuming low FODMAP foods and slowly introducing high FODMAP foods after eight weeks one at a time to detect sensitivity.
At the end of 12 weeks, people are able to determine foods that don’t irritate their digestive system and cause discomfort.
