10 – The Diabetic Diet

For those who are diabetic or pre-diabetic, a nutritional overall is often necessary to ensure the body’s glucose levels stay within a healthy range. This means monitoring carbohydrate intake and avoiding refined carbohydrates found in white bread, potatoes, white rice, juice and soda.
Instead, a healthy diabetic diet is all about consuming lean proteins, vegetables and foods high in fibre.
The misconception is that a diabetic meal plan means avoiding all sugars, when instead, it’s about monitoring the sugars you consume, and making sure they come from natural sources such as citrus fruits and berries, instead of desserts, cookies and sugary candies.
According to the American Diabetes Association, being overweight and diabetes can lead to serious health complications. Losing weight can help mitigate the effects of diabetes, and in some cases, can lead to “remission.”
If you’re diabetic or pre-diabetic, consult your doctor or nutritionist to create a meal plan and carbohydrate range that works for your age and level of physical activity.
