Reviewer Drops iPhone 8 From Various Heights In Durability Test

Zach Nelson continued his strength test in a new video posted Sunday that put the newest Apple product to the drop test.

YouTuber Zack Nelson, known for his tech review channel JerryRigEverything, put the newly released iPhone 8 to the durability test last week by attempting to burn it, scratch it and bend it. Nelson continued his strength test in a new video posted Saturday that put the newest Apple product to the drop test — something of a known hazard of owning the glass-paneled smartphone.

In a Sept. 21 poll on Twitter, Nelson asked his followers from what height they usually dropped their phones and offered the responses of knee height, waist height, chest height and head height. Waist height took the cake with 59 percent of the vote, chest height came in second with 25 percent of the responses and knee height won 11 percent of the vote. These three were the ones he used for the drop test.

Nelson tested two phones during the drop: one without a protective case and the other with a case by Anker, a California-based technology company that specializes in mobile accessories. He recorded the footage in slow motion using two other smartphone cameras.

From knee height, the unprotected case was unscathed during the drop test and the protected iPhone saw little more than a ding in the case’s corner. In the waist-height drop, the bare iPhone got a nick on one corner but wasn’t affected on its glass front or back. A third drop from the height saw a crack in the corner of the iPhone’s front pane. While the cased phone was protected on the front and back panels in a chest-height drop in several drops, the back panel was shattered on the unprotected phone on the first attempt.

“I don’t know if this is the most durable glass ever on a smartphone,” Nelson concluded. “It only took a couple drops to destroy the back and the front glass. I would say treat this like any glass phone and don’t trust it with any kind of drop at all.”
