“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny, received a call from the L.A. Coroner’s office. The coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss,” Simmons’ publicist Tom Estey shared in a statement to People.

Simmons died at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the age of 76. It was one day after his birthday.

According to TMZ after his death, Simmons suffered a fall at his home on Friday, July 12, but declined seeking medical attention. The outlet reported that his housekeeper tried to convince him to go to the hospital, but he wanted to stay home on his birthday. On Saturday morning, his housekeeper found Simmons unresponsive on the floor next to his bed. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and police said there were no signs of foul play.

“I don’t want people to be sad about my brother,” Lenny told People after his brother’s death. “I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives. He truly cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer help. So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life.”
