Richard Simmons Laid to Rest in Private Funeral with Close Friends and Family

The fitness guru was found dead on Saturday, July 13, just a day after his 76th birthday

A funeral for Richard Simmons was held on Friday, July 19 in Los Angeles, California, nearly a week after the fitness guru was found dead at the age of 76.

"Our beloved Dicky was laid to rest this morning surrounded by only family and closest friends," his brother Lenny told PEOPLE in a statement provided by Simmons' longtime publicist, Tom Estey. "We pray for your continued love and support during this very difficult time."

According to a death certificate obtained by TMZ, Simmons was buried at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary.

A cause of death was not listed, according to the outlet. Instead, the certificate, noted that the manner of death is still pending an investigation.

Just on Thursday, July 18, a enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told PEOPLE that the Los Angeles Police Department "are not pursuing the investigation as if foul play was involved at this point."

Simmons was found unresponsive on the morning of Saturday, July 13, in his Los Angeles home, a day after his 76th birthday.

He had reportedly suffered a fall in his bathroom the night before, according to TMZ, but refused to get help despite being urged by his housekeeper to get medical attention. That same housekeeper who helped him to bed that evening discovered him the next morning, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time of his death, Simmons had been out of the public spotlight for nearly a decade. But two days prior, he gave what would be his last interview with PEOPLE.

"I feel good!" the late star said. "I am grateful that I'm here, that I am alive for another day. I'll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people."

He went on to tell PEOPLE that he was working on a Broadway show about his life and corresponded with fans even while he remained away from Hollywood. "I know people miss me. And you know what? I miss them, too," he said. "But I'm able to reach them through phone calls… and through emails."

Lenny also talked about bond between Simmons and his fans, asking those same fans to honor his brother's life in that same positive spirit. "Remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives," Lenny told PEOPLE on Saturday. "He truly cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer help."

"So don’t be sad," Lenny added. "Celebrate his life."
