Richmond RCMP officer hit by allegedly distracted driver

Hold the phone: App helps B.C. man beat distracted driving ticket

A Mountie in Richmond, B.C., has been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by an allegedly distracted driver, police say.

Richmond RCMP say one of their officers attempted to pull over the driver of a brown Audi on Monday after seeing the driver using what appeared to be a mobile phone near No. 3 Road and Alderbridge Way.

Police say the driver initially stopped the car, but then abruptly turned and fled, striking the officer in the process.

The vehicle also collided with a police car and a civilian car in the escape, causing "substantial" damage to the police car, according to a release from the RCMP.

Police later found the badly damaged Audi abandoned on the 7000 block of Heather Street in Vancouver — but no sign of the driver.

Richmond RCMP are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact them, or Crime Stoppers if they wish to remain anonymous.
