The Cleveland Cavaliers fought valiantly, but they fell to the overwhelming Golden State Warriors in five games in the 2017 NBA Finals. As you might expect, the loss hit Cavs fans and backers hard — none harder perhaps, than noted LeBron James supporter Rihanna.

The international music sensation, who became the star of Game 1 of these Finals for her front-row interactions with Warriors star and eventual Finals MVP Kevin Durant, responded to the defeat by performing that most gut-wrenching of digital debasements. That’s right: RiRi Crying Jordan’d herself for the ‘gram.

This tasteful, elite Photoshop alters an image Rihanna shared during the Cavs’ 2016 playoff run, in which she showed her support for the King by wearing his number in a somewhat unconventional fashion:

I’m just glad Rihanna’s now able to poke a little bit of fun at herself. It seemed like she was taking the Cavs’ loss really hard — at least, based on that other meme she posted to Instagram. You know: the one from “The Lion King,” where Durant-as-Scar snuffs out LeBron-as-Mufasa while Rihanna-as-Simba watches.

I remain unsure I understand what is being communicated here — is Rihanna positioning herself as LeBron’s child in this analogy? — but the tone is definitely disconcerting! By comparison, a self-Crying MJ is a comparative breath of fresh air. They did tell us that Rihanna was a savage; they didn’t tell us, though, that she was so refreshingly self-deprecating.

Hat-tip to Charlotte Wilder of SB Nation.
