Rip current warning for P.E.I. National Park downgraded to moderate

Parks Canada says surf conditions off P.E.I. National Park are now moderate with rip currents present after issuing a warning of dangerous rip currents earlier Wednesday.

As of 3 p.m., three beaches — Cavendish, Brackley and Greenwich — are listed on the Parks Canada website as having moderate surf conditions with rip currents present.

Parks Canada says people should "exercise caution and swim only within your limits as rip currents are present."

It recommends swimmers stay in areas that are supervised.

It also warns rip currents can change quickly and says people should pay attention to flag changes indicating upgraded dangerous surf conditions.

If a swimmer is being swept out to sea, they should try to attract the attention of someone on shore and tread water or swim parallel to shore in the hope of escaping the current.

Prince Edward Island has been under a heat warning this week, with relief not expected until Thursday.
