Hurricane Milton is intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico, reaching speeds of 85 mph on Sunday night as a Category 1 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. Late Monday night, Milton is forecast to reach Category 4 status and stay at that strength through Tuesday before weakening slightly on Wednesday before it makes landfall as a Category 3, per the NHC. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Milton is currently forecast to make landfall in the Madeira Beach area of Pinellas County around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, adding that the forecast path of the storm could change over the next few days.

REST OF THE WEEKEND We expect morning fog and a mix of sunshine with a few heavy morning clouds before temperatures warm into the 70s on Sunday. A milder airmass brings highs down into the 70s this week in the Triad and Foothills with chilly 40s expected through middle of the week. Mountain valleys and western slopes may dip into the upper 30s by Thursday and Friday mornings. There is a new system in the Guld of Mexico that may impact Florida’s west coast as a Category 3 or higher storm by late week. Milton became a tropical storm on Saturday afternoon and is forecast to move toward Tampa and over Orlando into Thursday and Friday of the coming week. On the current track and with a strong developing ridge of high pressure moving into the Carolinas, no impact from Milton is expected over inland North Carolina at this time. There may be tropical rainbands that are able to reach the Wilmington and Atlantic Beach areas, but rainfall totals are forecast to be low.
