“The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.” - Government of Canada website.
The motion to close the RM office for the day is a significant shift for the rural council when in 2021, the RM got into hot water when ethics complaints were filed over their discussion.
This year Councilor Garry Dixon added the item to the agenda. He noted that while other provinces recognize the day as a statutory holiday, Saskatchewan has yet to designate the day. “I think as an RM we should recognize that day.”
Changes to legislation by Parliament recognized the day as a National Federal Statutory Holiday. It is up to individual provinces whether they designate the day as a statutory holiday.
