RNC urges extra caution for winter motorcyclists

RNC urges extra caution for winter motorcyclists

After an unseasonably warm November on the Avalon, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is urging drivers and motorcyclists to be extra careful when driving around each other

Const. Karen Didham, an accident investigator with the RNC, says that drivers can be less cautious of motorcycles in the winter months because of their increasing rarity on the roads.

With the warmer weather and an absence of significant snowfall this month, more motorcycles than usual have been spotted out on the town.

Didham is urging drivers of enclosed vehicles to make sure they are exercising caution around these motorcyclists.

"For the passenger cars and trucks, we want to make sure that your headlights are on and that you're keeping a safe distance behind motorcycles," said Didham.

Two-way street

But it's a two-way street. Motorcyclists must also exercise increased caution while out on the town.

"For people that are operating the motorcycles, given that the days are shorter, we want to make sure that you have high visibility clothing on and lots of lights on your motorcycle as well," she said.

It's expected that the level of motorcycles on the road will decrease when the Avalon Peninsula receives its first significant snowfall.
