Rob Ford's Famed 'Crack Tie' Sells On eBay

Bidding on eBay for the patterned tie that ex-Toronto mayor Rob Ford wore when he admitted smoking crack cocaine has finished with a winning bid of $16,100 (£10,572).

A total of 111 bids were placed on the brightly-patterned tie containing American football team logos, which was auctioned as part of a "spring cleaning" according to Ford's personal assistant.

Ford had described the elaborately patterned and brightly coloured tie as the "only one in existence" and said it would come with a signed certificate confirming its authenticity.

Other items Ford put up for sale included patterned trousers he wore when he was photographed during a shopping trip, which sold for $660 (£433), and a Saskatchewan Roughriders jersey which went for $1,550 (£1,017).

Ford's four-year tenure as mayor of Canada's largest city was marred by his drinking and crack cocaine use.

His drug abuse was first revealed in 2013 when an alleged drug dealer tried to sell a video of him smoking crack to the media.

In 2014 he announced he would not seek re-election as he was battling Liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer . His brother, a city councillor, ran in his place.

Ford had announced previously that 10% of the proceeds he made from selling his memorabilia would go towards research and care facilities for treating the disease.
