Rob Rinder criticises Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for accepting human rights award

Watch: Rob Rinder asks Harry and Meghan to show some 'humility'

Rob Rinder has criticised Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for accepting a human rights award ahead of the release of their Netflix documentary later this week.

Co-hosting Good Morning Britain with Susanna Reid, Rinder attacked the couple for lacking 'humility' by accepting the Ripple of Hope award for making a stand against racism in the royal family.

"The thing that strikes me is... just have a little bit of humility," the presenter began.

Rinder compared the couple to human rights campaigners around the world: "I'm certainly no Dalia Lama, but you think of people who have spent their lives campaigning for human rights — Baroness Doreen Laurence, Kwajo [Tweneboa] who works in housing, the women of Iran who are fighting for freedom at the moment, ordinary citizens in China."

He added: "The idea that you... would go and collect a human rights award for taking lots of money to gripe at your family and — in my view — not really do anything meaningful to expose structural racism, but rather instead damage an institution."

Susanna Reid did defend the pair, commenting: "Of course there's justification. I see your argument, Rob. But what I am trying to say, the point I am trying to make, is that if you're involved in a news story, press photographers will be outside your house. I understand they are royals, but it can be a pretty horrible experience."

She reiterated: "I think a lot of people watching don't realise it can be a pretty horrible experience."

Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary is set to air in two parts. The first will premiere on the streaming service on 8 December while the follow up installment will air a week later on 15 December.

The documentary is set to deal with the couple's controversial relationship with the media and accusations that there was a 'war on Meghan' in the press.
