Marvel hero Robert Downey Jr could have a colossal misfire on his hands with Dolittle.

After a bumpy road to the screen – with a title change and delayed release – Dolittle's first reviews were some of the worst Downey Jr has ever received.

But things are potentially about to get a whole lot worse, as the movie currently sits on domestic box office earnings of $57 million – around $118 million shy of its production budget.

There's still light at the end of the tunnel for Downey Jr's animal communicator though, as the movie is yet to be released overseas.

For example, the Chinese market has the power to completely change Dolittle's fortunes, just as it did with last year's fantasy sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

With exactly a month before it debuts in China (February 21), the next few weeks will be a nervy affair for studio executives and the main man himself, whose production company Team Downey was involved in the making of Dolittle.

Will Downey Jr's first post-Marvel venture follow in the footsteps of recent box office flops Gemini Man and Terminator: Dark Fate?

Dolittle is out now in US cinemas, and arrives in the UK on February 7.
