Robert Pattinson was caught lying to 'Tenet' director Christopher Nolan over Batman audition
There’s no fooling Christopher Nolan.
Robert Pattinson found out as much when he attempted to wiggle out of work on the Memento and Inception director’s latest mind-bender Tenet so that he could try out for the role of Batman.
“I had to be really secretive about Batman stuff,” the actor told The Irish Times in a new profile on the pair’s upcoming sci-fi collaboration. “So I had to lie to Chris about having to go for a screen test – I said I had a family emergency. And as soon as I said, ‘It’s a family emergency,’ he said: ‘You’re doing the Batman audition, aren’t you?’”
It’s not the least bit surprising that Nolan would have his ear to the ground on Batman happenings (Batenings?). The British auteur restored The Caped Crusader to glory with the feverishly adored Dark Knight trilogy.
Pattinson, the Twilight alum who’s been able to progress beyond his pin-up status thanks to highly acclaimed indies like Good Time and The Lighthouse, ultimately nabbed the role of Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman, reportedly edging out fellow Englishman Nicholas Hoult for the part. The Batman, which costars Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Paul Dano (The Riddler) and Andy Serkis (Pennyworth), is currently 25 percent complete after being forced to shut down production in mid-March due to the coronavirus.
The actor recognizes the irony is attempting to be secret around Nolan.
“It’s funny because Chris is so secretive about everything to do with his movies,” he told The Irish Times.
Tenet is a prime example. The time-travel thriller’s plot details remain vague despite the fact that it’s only weeks from being released (it’s scheduled to open – in theaters – internationally on Aug. 26 and in the U.S. on Sept. 3, though its release date has already been moved a couple of times because of COVID-19). Amazing, it’s close-to-three minute-trailer reveals next to nothing.
“Armed with only one word, Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, a Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time,” reads the plot summary on IMDb. (The protagonist is played by BlacKkKlansman star John David Washington, not Pattinson, but amazing they worked a “twilight” mention in there nonetheless.)
The film, The Irish Times notes, “according to best guesses – follows a secret agent with skills that may or may not include time manipulation – on a mission to stop World War III.”
Tenet opens Sept. 3 – or at least that’s the plan right now.
