Robert Redford lists Northern California home where ‘sea breeze caresses your soul.’ See it
Actor Robert Redford and his artist wife Sybille Szaggars Redford are selling their secluded home in Northern California, which sits on an unpaved cul de sac along the San Francisco Bay, for $4.15 million, according to the Compass real estate firm.
The remodeled split-level cottage on the Tiburon peninsula, encircled by redwood trees, spans 2,800 square feet with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. While not included in the asking price, some of the furniture and artwork in the home, much of it created by the sellers, can be negotiated, according to a Compass representative.
The couple bought the house in 2020 for $3.1 million, according to public property records, and set about personalizing the residence. They said in an emailed statement that cosmetic changes were made to the interior to brighten it up and enhance the coastal feel of the place
Because “we love spending time outside,” they improved the outdoor terraces and gardens to create a seamless floor between indoor and outdoor spaces.
“We love Mediterranean gardens and Tiburon’s climate is perfect for plants like lavender, jasmine and succulents, all water wise plants which now grace the outdoor spaces around the home,” the Redfords said.
San Francisco Bay views
The home is spotlighted by a large family room, front garden and patio and south and east decks offering 1,000 square feet of space.
Located at 2517 Mar East St., the property overlooks the San Francisco Bay with views of Angel Island, Raccoon Straits and the East Bay. This residence was built in 1968.
The listing agent is Steven Mavromihalis of Compass.
“It is a place where the sound of the seabirds and lapping waves replaces the hum of modern life; a place where the cool sea breeze caresses your soul, and where, in such moments, time seems to stand still,” the official property listing states.
That’s what attracted the Redfords to the seaside home.
“We were immediately struck by the warmth of the home with its light-filled rooms, along with the views of Keil Cove, the San Francisco Bay and Angel Island — the home has lovely and distinct views from each room,” the Redfords said. “We also were attracted to the privacy that the home offers, as it sits on a quiet, unpaved cul de sac, which does not experience a lot of traffic.”
The Redfords are selling the property because they don’t spend as much time in Tiburon as they would like. Santa Fe, New Mexico, is where they mostly reside now. Sybylle Szaggars Redford has been focusing on her fine art gallery there. They also devote much of their time to the nonprofit organization The Way of the Rain, which is headquartered in Santa Fe and produces educational and artistic performances to help protect the environment and promote global conservation efforts.
The couple said they’ll miss the San Francisco Bay Area community.
“We have a long history with and great affection for the town of Tiburon, having previously owned other homes in the area,” they said in the statement. “We have always loved the fact that one can walk to most places, not only stores and restaurants, but also hiking trails in the nearby open space. The town’s promenade, which has wonderful views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, is a favorite spot of ours — it has a friendly vibe, and we enjoy walking the path and exchanging greetings with other walkers, both people and dogs. And the ferry located in the town center is convenient for accessing various destinations in the Bay Area.”
