Roof fire cancels classes at Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute

A small fire on the roof of Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute caused by the installation of new roofing materials has cancelled classes at the school today, but the daycare remains open.

Toronto Fire Services was called to the school on Overlea Boulevard in North York just before 8 p.m. Tuesday night for a two-alarm fire.

Fire crews had to put out a blaze that was between the roof and a ceiling above the gymnasium, peeling back the materials the workers had installed as well as opening up the ceiling from below.

Nobody was injured.

Toronto Fire Services said 12 trucks and 45 firefighters responded to the call.

Toronto District School Board trustee Gerri Gershon said in an email that the child-care centre at the school remains open today as the first floor of the school is safe, but all students should stay home while the second floor is being cleaned.
