The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley is attached to write and exec-produce the new spinoff, while Rookie star Nathan Fillion is also among the project’s executive producers. Lionsgate Television and 20th Television will co-produce.

The Rookie previously spun off the Niecy Nash-Betts-led series The Rookie: Feds, which followed an ensemble of FBI agents and debuted in September 2022. It was ultimately cancelled at ABC after just one season.

The mothership series, meanwhile, is poised to return for its seventh season on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 10/9c. (See ABC’s full midseason schedule here.) And The Rookie isn’t the only ABC series widening its scope: Another spinoff of first responder drama 9-1-1 is in the works; here’s everything we know so far about the project.
