Rosemont hit-and-run suspect flees on foot, steals car before nabbed by police

A section of Viau Street in Montreal's Rosemont neighbourhood was left resembling the scene of a demolition derby this morning, after a dramatic hit and run, and police chase.

At about 11 p.m. ET Tuesday, police received a call about a car speeding south on Viau Street.

The car rear-ended one vehicle, then hit a parked car near Saint-Zotique Street East.

The speeding car then careened into a pole and flipped onto its side.

Several bystanders helped the driver get out of the car, but then he took off running.

Montreal police spokesman Manuel Couture said by the time officers made it to the scene, the driver was gone.

But not long afterwards, Montreal police received a second 911 call from a man who said someone had taken his keys out of his hand and stolen his car.

The suspect fit the description of the person involved in the earlier collision.

Police used the tip to track down the 33-year-old man to the corner of Rosemont Boulevard and D'Orléans Avenue, but the suspect took off on foot again.

Couture said officers chased after the man and took him into custody.

Police said the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

The driver of the first car that was hit, a 47-year-old woman, was taken to hospital. Her injuries are not life-threatening.
