Roughriders release DB Brandon McDonald, add Major Culbert

Despite scoring their first win of the season, the Saskatchewan Roughriders still weren't satisfied with the entire roster.

On Monday, the team released defensive back Brandon McDonald, and added defensive back Major Culbert to the practice roster.

McDonald had one defensive tackle and one special teams tackle on Friday against Ottawa. However, he had a tough game overall and was victimized by Ottawa receiver Brad Sinopoli on a 65-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

He was originally acquired by the Riders in a trade with Calgary for a negotiation-list player on June 19. In four games with the Riders McDonald had six tackles on defence.

Culbert comes to Saskatchewan with very little CFL playing experience. In three games with the Toronto Argonauts in 2013, Culbert had 13 tackles on defence.

The 28-year-old spent three seasons at the University of Nebraska from 2006 to 2008.

Culbert will wear McDonald's old No. 22.

The Riders (1-3) look for their second win of the season on Friday night in Montreal against the Alouettes.
