Roundabout proposed for Stratford intersection

The P.E.I. Department of Transportation is proposing a roundabout in Stratford for what the mayor describes as an increasingly busy intersection.

The roundabout would replace intersections that connect the Mason and Georgetown Roads to the Trans-Canada Highway.

"It's harder to get out of the Mason Road onto the Trans-Canada than it was in the past," said Mayor David Dunphy.

"The construction of the soccer field and the business park and the indoor soccer complex, as well at the new subdivision and the general roads off the business park, have increased traffic in that area substantially."

Dunphy said it's important to prevent accidents as the intersection gets busier.

"So it's more a question of planning for the future and being proactive to ensure that there are no accidents happening in the future."

The precise alignment and position of the roundabout is still in the planning stages, but the province has told the town construction could start next year.

An open house to present the plans will be held at Stratford Town Hall on Wednesday, 7 - 9 p.m. Representatives with the province will be at the meeting to answer questions and do a presentation.
