EMBRUN – The township of Russell could see an additional $77,465 in provincial funding in response to transportation-related issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the municipality’s March 15 council meeting, politicians approved a bylaw authorizing the mayor and clerk to execute the agreement to enter into the transfer payment agreement with the province for Phase 2 of the Safe Restart Agreement for transit. The township received notification on March 2 of its eligibility to receive up to $77,465. Russell received $55,184 in funding during Phase 1 of the Ontario Safe Restart Agreement. This amount was used to address municipal transit pressures between April 1, 2020 and Sept. 30, 2020. Phase 2 was created to support municipal transit pressures between Oct. 1, 2020 and March 31. In his recommendation, director of finances-treasurer Richard Godin noted that while this was not considered as part of the budget, the information was relayed to council during the Dec. 21, 2020 and Feb. 1 meetings. It was during the February meeting that council decided to give 417 Bus Line Limited six-months notice and end Russell Transpo.
