Russia must understand that NATO will defend every inch of its territory - German Chancellor Scholz

NATO's recent measures to fortify its eastern borders are specifically aimed to show the Kremlin that the Alliance is ready to defend itself, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, Reuters reported.

"Because the threat from Russia will continue, we and other allies decided last year to deploy additional units to the Baltic states and to station an entire brigade there permanently in the future," Scholz said during his address at the East German Economic Forum on June 2.

"This turnaround in security policy is necessary to show Russia: We are prepared to defend every square inch of NATO territory against attacks."

Diplomacy will only succeed from a position of strength, highlighting the crucial importance of Baltic countries being able to fully rely on their NATO allies for protection in the event of a Russian attack, Scholz said.
