Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev dies from injuries sustained in fight

Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from injuries he sustained in his fight against Subriel Matias on Friday night. Buddy McGirt, Dadashev’s trainer, and strength and conditioning coach Donatas Janusevicius confirmed the news to ESPN.

Dadashev lost in an 11th-round TKO in an IBF junior welterweight fight. McGirt, Dadashev’s Hall of Fame trainer, made the decision to stop the fight after the 11th round, determining that the 28-year-old had taken too much punishment over the course of the fight. Matias landed 319 shots on Dadashev during the bout, including 112 to the body.

"God forbid, one punch as you know can change a whole guy's life and I wasn't going to let that happen," McGirt said in a post-fight interview. "I'd rather have them be mad at me for a day or two than to be mad at me for the rest of their life."

Following the fight, Dadashev needed assistance leaving the ring, vomited before reaching his dressing room and later left the arena on a stretcher before being transported to a local hospital. According to ESPN, Dadashev had bleeding in his brain, underwent emergency surgery and was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma.

As of Saturday morning, Dadashev was listed in critical condition and showed signs of severe brain damage. At that point, Janusevicius told ESPN that the bleeding and swelling in Dadashev’s brain had stopped.

Dadashev entered Friday night’s fight with a 13-0 record as a professional.
