Saab Unveils World’s Most Advanced Stealth Submarine With ‘Ghost’ Mode

Saab has unveiled was it claims to be the most advanced stealth submarine in the world, sporting a ‘ghost’ mode that renders it effectively invisible.

The Kockums A26 packs Saab’s new Ghost (Genuine Holistic STealth) technology which makes the sub almost impossible to spot during silent service, says the maker.

Along with the new ‘invisibility’ mode, the submarine also has a ‘Multimission Portal’ that can be used by Special Forces divers to enter and exit while the sub is underwater. The portal has room for up to eight divers to sit ready for a mission in the sea.

Capable of diving to depths of more than 200m, the sub is 62m in length and can accommodate up to 26 people.

Saab has agreed a $1billion deal to build two of the high-tech subs for the Swedish Navy.

The new submarine sports a modular design, which means that it can be upgraded more easily

Rubber mountings are used to minimise noise from on-board machinery while acoustic damping plates are also used to stay as quiet as possible.

Powered by diesel-electric propulsion machinery, the sub has numerous ways of staying undetected including its unique hull shape with noise absorption and reflective coating.

Designed to withstand the impact of underwater explosions, the sub is designed for a variety of military missions including covert intelligence operations, anti-submarine warfare and mine-laying.
