Sacramento is handing out free $50 bonus gift cards to shoppers. Here’s how to get one

The city of Sacramento is handing out free gift cards to folks who shop locally this holiday season.

Under the returning Shop 916 program, people who spend as little as $25 on electric gift cards to more than 100 participating Sacramento businesses can get more gift cards for free, the city said in a Wednesday news release.

Those bonus gift cards can be used at any participating business in the city.

This year’s promotion kicks off Wednesday and runs through February.

The Shop 916 program, which the city launched in December 2021, “supports local storefront retailers negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the release said.

It’s paid for with American Rescue Plan funding for business recovery efforts, the city said.

To date, shoppers have spent a total of $535,000 worth of gift cards in the city of Sacramento as part of the Shop 916 program, according to the release.

“This is a great way to give gifts and impact the local economy,” Valerie Mamone-Werder, Sacramento’s project development manager responsible for the program, said in the release.

How much are free gift cards worth?

Anyone who buys a $25 e-gift card to a participating business online via the city’s Shop 916 website will get a $10 bonus gift card for free.

Folks who buy a $50 gift card will get a $25 bonus gift card for free. And those who buy a $100 gift card will get a free $50 bonus gift card.

There are reduced or waived fees for purchases of $1,000 and more, the city said.

How long are gift cards good for?

The promotional offer is available Wednesday through Feb. 15, the city said.

Bonus gift cards must be used by March 31, but regular consumer-purchased gift cards don’t expire.

How many free gift cards can I get?

Bonus gift cards are limited to five per customer, the release said.
