Sad end to search for missing hunter as 25-year-old’s body found, SC coroner says

The search for a missing hunter ended Saturday when his family and friends discovered the 25-year-old man’s body, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.

A 911 call was made at about 3 p.m. after Dalton Jordan’s body was found in the area near Flat Rock Road, Coroner David West said Sunday night in a news release. Jordan was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound, according to the release.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources called Jordan’s death “a hunting accident.”

“Initial investigation indicates that this is an isolated incident involving a single individual who sustained a gunshot wound and died at the scene,” SCDNR said.

Information about who fired the fatal shot was not available.

There was no word about when Jordan went hunting, or when he was reported missing.

Jordan’s death continues to be investigated by SCDNR and the coroner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Monday at Newberry Medical Center, according to West.

This was the second hunting-related death in South Carolina in the past week.

On the evening of Oct. 29 in Dorchester County, a hunter said he thought he was shooting at a deer when he heard rustling in the woods, but wound up killing a woman and injuring her husband while they were walking their dog, officials said. The husband was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.

Kristofer McDonald, 20, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, criminal negligent use of a firearm resulting in great bodily harm, criminal negligent use of a firearm resulting in death and night hunting, according to SCDNR.
