Safeway on 52nd Street N.E. slated to close

Officials aren't yet sure how many layoffs will result from the Dec. 10 closure of the Safeway in the TransCanada Centre on 52nd Street in northeast Calgary.

Employees were notified Oct. 19.

"This store had been underperforming for quite some time and was no longer financially viable to keep operating," Keri Scobie, director of communications for Western Canada, said in a statement.

"This was a strategic business decision and puts us in a better position for success in a very competitive market. We are currently working with employees and the union within the terms of the collective agreement."

It's estimated 112 employees will be affected.

"We appreciate the loyalty and support of our customers and employees over the years," said Scobie.
