Saint John farmers market returns to Queen Square

A Saint John favourite, the Queen Square Market, has returned to its namesake park now that renovations are almost complete.

For months, the market was operating out of a different park down the street.

The market's co-founder Jody Kliffer says the improvements to the park — including more seating — will benefit more than the Sunday market.

He also says the changes fit with the city's heritage district.

"It's more comfortable to be in the square and stay in the square and aesthetically, it matches," he said.

Walking through the park, Kliffer pointed out details such as vintage lamp posts with electric capacity.

Among the highlights are vintage outdoor chess tables, which local chess enthusiasts have been waiting for.

"Awesome. I mean you go to any big city in North America or even Europe, you see chess tables in public parks," said Randy Oldfield.

While the temporary location had an open feel and a playground, some felt it was missing something.

"People were coming in from further and further away, they were choosing this market over other weekend experiences. And we didn't see that as much in Rainbow Park. It was a very family-friendly atmosphere, but the numbers weren't growing," Richard Van Beek of Mitham's Farm Fresh Eggs.

Now that it's back in the park, how long the market will continue operating outdoors will depend on the weather.
